INDIANAPOLIS – The Southside’s Miracle Mile Parade is returning on Aug. 30 at 1 p.m for the second year, and Parade Director Mark Bowell said this year’s procession has only improved on last year’s a revival of the famed parade of Indiana past. Even after 2007’s successful return of the Miracle Mile Parade – last staged in 1957 – Bowell and the rest of the event committee feel that this year’s parade, themed “The Spirit of Indianapolis,” is going to be even better. “It’s going to be so much stronger than last year in terms of the types of entries,” Bowell said. “Last year was a really good first start. This year’s parade has more types of entries, more music, more pageantry. It’s going to be very solid.” The parade route will encompass more than two miles and will once again roll down Madison Avenue from Southern Avenue to Hanna in front of what is expected to be a crowd of thousands of onlookers. According to Bowell, the procession will feature many different floats and entries surrounded by various celebrity characters like Boomer from the Pacers, Freddy Fever from the Indiana Fever, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Mr. Slice from Papa Johns, Rowdie from the Indianapolis Indians and Do It Sam from Cardwell Home and Garden. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Motorcycle Drill Team will make a return appearance in this year’s parade, along with the IMPD Mounted Horse Patrol and the Johnson Country Shrine minicars. All entries will cruise the Miracle Mile in style to the tunes of several musical acts, including the Perry Meridian High School Marching Band, the Southport High School Marching Band, the Murat Shrine Band, the Indy 500 Gordon Pipers (a drum and bagpipes band) and a mariachi band, among others. Miracle Mile’s major sponsors, who will have a presence in the event, include: Keystone Construction, Associated Builders and Contractors,Inc., Cardwell Home and Garden Center, and the University of Indianapolis. Other sponsors and participants to date are the American Red Cross; City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works; Cardwell Home and Garden Center; First Class Lawn and Landscape; Flying W Awards; Friends of Garfield Park, Inc.; The Fuller Center for Housing; Gateway Community Alliance; Jonathan Byrd’s Cafeteria; Indiana/Kentucky Regional Council of Carpenters; Indiana Fever; Indianapolis Indians; Indiana Pacers; The Indianapolis Star;; Key West Shrimp House; Money Mailer; MZD Advertising; National City Bank; National Financial Group; Nordholt Heidenreich Florist; Papa John’s Pizza; Penn Station East Coast Subs; People Helping People; Pipers; Southern Plaza; St. Francis Hospitals and the University of Indianapolis. “Our theme ‘The Spirit of Indianapolis’ has taken hold. Our entries are not just from the Southside, they’re from all over the community,” Bowell said. “There are going to be so many more diverse entries in this parade. I think people will truly enjoy it. It’s a community gathering with a family-friendly mindset.” In addition to the parade, Southern Plaza once again will host “The Miracle Mile Open Car Show” with more than 300 cars of every make and model. A “Hall of Fame” display area is also available to any not-for-profit organization wishing to expose its resources to the community.
