Madam C.J. Walker was America’s first self-made female millionaire, as well as a pioneering social activist and an influential philanthropist. Her fortune was made by developing and marketing a hugely successful line of beauty and hair products for African-American women. Madam Walker donated generously to the NAACP and to the Tuskegee Institute, as well as black charities in Indianapolis.
Madam Walker encouraged political activism in her employees and she went to the White House in person to petition in favor of anti-lynching legislation.
