2010 MIRACLE MILE PARADE ENTRIES ARE ANNOUNCED

INDIANAPOLIS – The Fuller Center volunteers, representing over 300 volunteers from around the world, and families who will soon be the recipients of keys to their new or renovated homes, will be the honorary grand marshals of the parade, which runs along the stretch of Madison Avenue known as the Miracle Mile, between Southern and Sumner avenues.

With over 84 entries and an entire weekend of exciting events, the Miracle Mile Parade on Sept. 4 of Labor Day weekend is shaping up to be a “Weekend of Miracles.”

The official theme for the Miracle Mile Parade and the entire weekend is “Celebrating Miracles,” a theme that will honor the late Millard Fuller, recognized worldwide as the co-founder of Habitat for Humanity, and later the co-founder of The Fuller Center for Housing, and his legacy.

And HNTB Corporation, an employee-owned infrastructure firm serving federal, state, municipal, military and private clients, which is celebrating its 70th year in business in Indianapolis, has been named as the Title Sponsor of the Parade.

Special guests at the parade will include Linda Fuller, Millard’s wife and the co-founder of Habitat for Humanity and the co-founder of The Fuller Center for Housing, and Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and his wife Winnie. Other guests include David Snell, president of The Fuller Center and the Fuller Center International Board of Directors.

The parade entries include: University of Indianapolis; The Indianapolis Colts Cheerleaders; Indiana Sports and Entertainment, on behalf of The Indiana Pacers and The Indiana Fever, Pacers Players and Pacemates; Indianapolis 500 Gordon Players; Red Hot Scooter Babes; Wilbur from Famous Dave’s; Chick-Fil-A; PNC Bank; Friends of Garfield Park; Cardwell Do-it Best Home Center; Department of Public Works; and Indianapolis Neighborhood Housing Partnership.

This year, the parade will coincide with an amazing week of building new homes and renovating existing homes at the Millard Fuller Legacy Build (MFLB) 2010 which is centered at 1100-1200 St. Paul Street, Indianapolis, in the Fountain Square area.

The weekend will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 4 with the Miracle Mile Festival on Madison Avenue at 11 a.m., followed by the Miracle Mile Parade at 1 p.m.; and the Miracle Mile Car Show at 3 p.m. at Southern Plaza. That evening there will be a fireworks and concert at 6:30 p.m. called “America We Remember,” organized by “The Friends of Garfield Park.” All events on Saturday are free.

On Sunday Sept. 5, there will be a special event for the Legacy Build Volunteers from around the world to begin an entire week of building homes in the Fountain Square area where the Millard Fuller Legacy Build is taking place.

The build will start on Monday, Sept. 6 and end on Friday, Sept. 10.

The parade and weekend will also celebrate the “miracle” of millions of dollars of investment from the community that has been made in the area to help it continue to thrive.

ABOUT THE MIRACLE MILE PARADE

In 2007, the “Miracle Mile Parade” sought to rekindle the spirit of community from the days of yesteryear. In 1957, to be exact when Claude B. Kendall, owner of the Key West Shrimp House had a vision to bring families to the greater south side of Indianapolis to enjoy fine dining, great entertainment and an evening in the amphitheater at Garfield Park. Through his leadership and a partnership with the Madison Avenue Businessmen Association, the "Miracle Mile Parade" was first formed.

Today, more than 50 years later, the founding members of the Gateway Community Alliance have joined forces with both the private and public sectors on a journey to re-discover the “Miracle Mile Parade.”
